This should occur between each batch of birds. It is recommended to perform these steps on a concrete or easily draining surface so that splash back does not occur.

EMPTY

  • Remove litter/bedding then power wash/sweep out the house.
  • Remove drinkers, feeders, enrichment (wash these in a detergent, leave to dry and then soak in disinfectant).
  • The presence of bedding and faecal material in the environment will may the following steps less effective at reducing disease load.

DETERGENT

  • Wash the shed out thoroughly with detergent soap and water.
  • Pay close attention to the label dilutions and contact times.
  • All surfaces should be liberally covered.

DRY

  • Allow housing to dry completely.
  • Excess water allows for dilution of the disinfectant resulting in reduced effectiveness.

DISINFECT

  • Use a suitable disinfectant (recommend to use a DEFRA approved disinfectant that is active against diseases of the poultry order) on all surfaces.
  • Pay close attention to the label dilutions and contact times.
  • Coccidia problems may require a more specific disinfectant, such as those that are phenol based, and should be applied last due to their residual effect.
